Tim Walz: The Flashy Social Studies Teacher Who Gen Z Activists Want on the VP Ticket

Byline

In the world of politics, where flashiness and charisma often reign supreme, Tim Walz is a bit of an oddity. A former social studies teacher with a penchant for wearing flannel shirts and jeans, Walz is more known for his earnest demeanor and commitment to public service than his sartorial choices.

But don't let his unassuming exterior fool you. Walz is a rising star within the Democratic Party, and he's quickly become a favorite among Gen Z activists. They're drawn to his progressive values, his record of accomplishment as governor of Minnesota, and his ability to connect with young people.

Walz's rise in the political ranks has been nothing short of meteoric. After serving as a teacher for 20 years, he was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2006. Six years later, he was elected Lieutenant Governor, and in 2018, he became the 41st Governor of Minnesota.

Walz's tenure as governor has been marked by a series of progressive achievements, including the expansion of access to healthcare, the passage of paid family leave, and the signing of a 100% clean energy bill. He has also been a vocal critic of President Trump and his policies.

Walz's progressive values and his ability to connect with young people have made him a popular figure among Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris' supporters. In a recent poll of Gen Z Democrats, Walz ranked as the top choice for vice president.

Walz has said that he is "honored" to be considered for the vice presidency, but he has not yet made a decision about whether or not he will accept the offer. If he does, he would be the first Minnesotan to serve as vice president since Hubert Humphrey in the 1960s.
